All human activities are connected with the use of goods and services, which in turn are based on natural resources. But natural resources can only be regenerated to a certain degree, and are becoming increasingly scarce. In 2015 the Federal Council – acting via the SERI – thus commissioned the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) to conduct the National Research Programme “Sustainable Economy” (NRP 73). The aim was to obtain new scientific knowledge on how natural resources can be used sparingly while at the same time improving welfare and the competitiveness of Switzerland's economy. A total of 29 research projects have received financial support. CHF 20 million in funding was provided by the programme overall.
Findings of the programme will be presented at the final media conference.
